The Veteran Corps of Artillery State of New York or VCASNY was established in 1790, by the returning troops of George Washington's army.  After Washington bid farewell to his troops in New York City, they discovered that after sacrificing so much, the New York pro British Tory's had gotten quite wealthy during the War for Independence and might try to belittle what had been accomplished.

In response, they formed an organization to remind Americans of the majesty of their new nation and the sacrifices made to create a free people living in liberty.  By an act of Congress some 200 years ago, the VCA was made a permanent ceremonial branch of the U.S. Army Field Artillery.  They have loyally lived up to this tradition over the centuries and I'm proud to be a long time member and their photographer.

FLEET WEEK is a big deal in New York City and has been the unofficial kick off for Summer since 1984.  It's considered primarily a Naval event... by the Navy.  But that doesn't mean that the U.S. Army and Veteran Corps of Artillery can't transform it into a particularly bang up extravaganza, as the Armada passes by Brooklyn's Ft. Hamilton Army Base overlooking the Narrows entrance to NYC harbor.

Ships from all over the world attend, including a U.S. Naval armada headed up by the Assault Carrier "Wasp."  When the carrier passes the bluff in Ft. Hamilton overlooking the Narrows, they offer a gun salute.  In response, artillery of the VCA roars out a welcome from the U.S. Army.

200th Anniversary Remembrance

the War of 1812

Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn NY

Say what you will about the deficiencies in our educational system, but the military never forgets the history of forging America.  This was the second war fought against the all powerful British Empire.  Among other reasons, it was done because of British trade restrictions and their impressing American sailors into service with the Royal Navy.  Eventually, Britain would become a strong ally against forces of evil in the world, but this was a different time.
